Doom Time or Bloom Time- making the most of social distancing

Updated: Apr 23

With the Corona Virus running the show everywhere we look, it can be easy to default to viewing this situation as doom time. However, we can control our thoughts about the situation with a bit of effort at first, but once you get into the habit of changing this thought pattern, it could be as easy as breathing.

If we choose to label it as doom time, we will focus on the negative involved in the situation. It’s normal to struggle with this a bit. This situation is different than any other we have been in. We are learning more about the virus everyday and it is the topic discussed most on many platforms. While it is good to be informed and to do our part to stop the spread, it can bring forth emotions that are very difficult to deal with. We should always give ourselves time to experience an emotion and reflect upon where it's coming from and if there are ways to change the situation or ways to change our thought patterns, concerning the emotional trigger.

However, we don’t have to label this doom time. Of course, we should follow the CDC’s advice and do things like:

  • Social distancing

  • Staying at home unless it’s absolutely necessary to go out

  • Separating the sick from the well in our homes

  • Frequent hand washing for 20 seconds or more

We can do those things and still use this as an opportunity to bloom. By choosing to label this situation as bloom time, we can take this opportunity to do things like:

  • Meditate/pray for the health of everyone in the world.

  • Focus on adding nutritious foods to our diet.

  • Do yoga.

  • Connect with family and friends via social media, Skype, face time, or phone calls.

  • Spend more time with the loved ones in our home.

  • Read a book you’ve been wanting to read- want to avoid the bookstore? Get the digital version.

  • Start a blog.

  • Enjoy your hobbies.

  • Take a class that interests you or that will enhance your value in the workforce.

These are just suggestions and I'm sure you can find many more ways to turn the situation into a slightly more positive one. The point is, we can bloom where we are planted- at home. You might have to think outside the box, but if you’re stuck at home, you’ve probably got plenty of time to think. 😉

Take care of yourselves and use this as an opportunity to plant seeds that will be ready to harvest when this is over.

Sending you all positive vibes,
